Spring Clean your PC

As we are in the first official week of Spring, what better time to suggest some quick and easy ways to spring clean your PC!

It is fair to say most of us emerge from winter hibernation a little sluggish, and sometimes our computers can suffer from a similar feeling.

Spring is a time for new beginnings but it doesn’t have to mean you have to buy a new PC… there are lots of simple things you can do to restore new life to your old PC, and put a spring back in your desktops step!

If your hard drive is running out of space, occasional error messages are being displayed or you feel like you’ll be waiting until next year for your system to run the simplest of tasks, it is worth trying to revive it using the following steps:

  • Free up disk space – Firstly, make sure you uninstall any software that you haven’t used in a while. Windows Disk Cleanup is easy to do, as well as cleaning up System Restore Files and making sure you empty your web browser cache. You could use an application called Duplicate File Finder to identify and remove duplicate files on your system. And you can even download something like CCleaner for Windows to automate your clean up tasks so you don’t have to keep remembering to do them yourself!
  • Defragment your hard drive to speed up disk access – just head to the Start menu and search for Windows Disk Defragmenter
  • Enable Windows automatic updates – these updates can fix bugs and improve performance, but some updates also contain security patches to keep your PC secure.
  • Ensure you have a Firewall and antivirus software installed – in addition to Windows security patches, it’s important to protect your PC properly particularly if you have any sensitive or confidential business information on there.
